Paint Childhood Memories, A Place in His Heart and His Utopia

Kho, Chung-Hwan (art critic)

It's a bit exaggerated to say, but we are now in the era of loss. We lost God, nature, childhood memories and ourselves. Especially, the capitalism pursues the notion of the economy as top priority and efficiency maximization, while drives away things which have poor productivity. In this heartless world, there is no place for things having poor productivity or things not related with productivity. Due to this, it is inevitable for modern people to face various degrees of self-alienation or loss (alienation is loss ; alienation and loss go together). A place in our heart is one of the things that modern people lost. That place can be hometown or a home away from home or any place which is in your heart. Speaking more in depth, it is the feeling of what we lost and things that are irrevocable. Choi Sung-Hwan paints these feelings and it come from the past. Memories and recollections, remembrance and flashback. With aesthetic devices recalling the past, Choi Sung-Hwan paints the days when living in poverty but happy, when we were innocent and naive and when having difficulties but longing for the days grows stronger as times goes by. That is, he paints the good old days which are support to fall back on when the going gets tough. Those good old days usually come from the place in his heart. Though the place in his heart, the theme of his painting, stems from his personal affairs, it can relate to people easily due to the universality of it. He paints his personal affairs and the place in modern people's heart (consciously or unconsciously) at the same time.
