Yellow mud artist Park, Byung-Joon

Traveling from insadong to Bange station by line number 5 and following the asphalt road to a concrete star is the studio of Park, Byung-Joon which is filled with the smell of mud.

As always, we exchange pleasantries. We drink green tea during the rainy afternoon talking about art.

I have met Park, Byung-Joon about ten years ago when I visited the Modern art gallery every Sunday near the city. I was taking a walk when I happened on him sketching away silently completely absorbed in his work.

Nature is an artists ideologoy as well as his home.

It is the material in which he works with and a friend and a permanent resting place. Also, the beauty of korea is in it’s nature.

Korea’s mountains are apt materials for all artists and it reduces all artists to an insignificant speck in contrast to the great majestic beauty of nature itself.

Life starts with nature and ends with nature which is why humans are a part of it. Park, Byung-Joon is an artist that loves the yellow mud and pours all his passion and artistry into it. His gallery is filled with mud of all colors. I heard that this exhibitio will be filled with colossal pieces of work so I agreed to take a look at one of the bigger works.

There was a piece of work in the center of the gallery that was almost 12 meters tall. It took im 4 months to finish this one. To finish the 2000 pieces, he created 300 thousand dots which completely took my breath away.

The work process is first started by a sketch of ink which is covered with first yellow mud and than white mud and than a combination of the two uds which means that each dot was worked over six times. The amount of work that went into such a process is completel nind numbing and is enough to capture the imagination of all the observers.

Park, Byung-Joon draws with dots, lines, and yellow mud.

His sketches capture the essence of things and completely ignores the scenograph and the basic foundatin of most pictures and uses the entire screen to divide and destroy the lost points and creates an intentional change that expresses through points and lines that leaves the margins with a luxury by not coloring in the sky. roads, humans, and the rivers which redistributes the screen that explains his hidden feelings.

Therefore the yellow mud is simply the natural groud and a representation of his art is shown within it.

It has been 30 years since Park, Byung-Joon concentrated on yellow mud. with his first exhibition held in 1994, he has held four more exhibitjions titled Slave of the Yellow mud and is remembered as an artist the understands the koreaness 쟈소초 is always reflected in his works.

The 700 some works caputre my attention again.

I ask him why he only uses yellow mud in his works. He answers “I believe that all living things ar yellow mud. All living things are born through the combined energy of the earth and sky and live through the nourishment of the earth and fially return to earth and that is why I love he earth”. The yellowmud is the foundation of all life.

He has worked with nearl everg form of art imaginable for 30years and finally chose the earth as his material for his material for his art and has traveled everywhere to find the yellow and white mud to show everyone the beauty of the eart.

He sometimes stare off into the distance still dreaming about the blue mud that he has et to find. Our conversation continues through the tea time.

This exhibition will show works that are huge and hopefully, works that contain the artist’s soul in ti I could see it in his eyes, the desire to draw enen bigger works that start from the western sea to the eastern sea and to draw the Chinese Silk road.

Nature does not abandon us or come fo find us.

We have a responsibility to protect nature and to love it. Like the stream doesn’t dr out deep in the mountain valley, the love of the earth that Park, Byung-Joon has will not leave us.

He will always live on, known as the artist who, much like the earth that he works with, has the strength and the perseverance of his material and keep on drawing his ictures.
