History is a necessary condition for the formation of art. lt provides the
fertile ground which gives birth to art. Being steeped in its culture and
being part of its society is what makes a person a part of the land.
Only someone who knows the history of his own land can truly understand
the world and its history as well.
The artist Park Byungjoon believes that while tradition must be preserved,
revolutionary vew artistic techniques are necessary to bring about
changes in thoughts and actions.
However, by following his beliefs, he has come full circle.
As the wisdom of our ancestors springs from the earth, it is not surprising
that we feel a certain affinity to the earth.
Park experimented with yellow clay to paint his work in the traditional style
of our ancestors. However, after only three months, the clay became
brittle and fell off the canvas.
While trying to figure out how our ancestors managed to keep the clay on
the canvas, he stumbled onto an acrylic gil that could be bonded with the
clay and used to paint it on. The gel was water-based which helped
immensely with the clay.
His innovation helped him restore a lost technique.
lt helped to hold the clay in place and allowed the works to be
rolled up and stored.
