“Nong” or “jang” is the name used to refer to the

category of furniture that includes dressers,

cabinets, bookcases and bureaus. Nong refers to furniture

that has one level, whereas Jang can have multiple levels.

Jang has a body which uses one wood shingle without any

cuts or separation.

Two doors are attached in the center, and there are

divisions of space where clothes are stored.

Depending on its shapes, Jang can be two or three-tiered.

Mother-of-pearl, bamboo, red sandalwood, and a reed mat

can be used as materials to embellish Jang.

Jang can divided into a butterfly two-tiered type, and a

bird couple three-tiered type.

Pine trees, Zelkova wood, paulownia wood or bamboo are

usually used in making Jang.

Until the early Chosun Cynasty, wood furniture was

produced for royal families or the upper class, but wider

production for other classes of society expanded in the

late Chosun Dynasty.

The different types of Jang increasingly began to reflect

the regions in which they were made.

This work has unique and rare decorations and is in near

perfect condition.

lt is believed that this Jang was used for a member of the

royal court or for a person of the upper class.
