It recently became unfold that wild native tea is growing in various parts of Korea, especially the southeastern and southwestern areas.’

There are three theories about the origins of Korean tea: the introduction from China, the importation from India, or just from widely grown tea.

If we look closer to these theories, first of all, the idea of introduction from China is based on the record of early chronicle histories known

as Samkuk-sagi that King Heungdeok (828) obtained tea seeds from Tang China for planting all over the Ssanggyesa and Hwaeomsa Temple.

In fact, this is a claim unworthy of comment in that there has been a record of drinking and using tea for rituals before that.

Secondly, the one about importation from India is based on the record about Huh, Hwang Ok, a princess of the Ayuta kingdom,

had brought some tea seeds when she got married to the King Suro of Geumgwan Gaya(48).

Contrary to the two above-mentioned theories, last one is about some wildly growing tea plants in Korea.

The native regions of tea correspond roughly to subtropical forests(where the plants usually have leaves that are glossy,

like camellias), and most of the northeastern part of India, the southern part of Korea, China, and Japan.

For that reason, the recent theory explains that tea plants were already widely distributed in these areas early in the Cenozoic era before the birth of mankind.

In addition, it has recently been explained that wild native tea plants thrive in various regions in southern part of Korea.

Therefore, the theory which explains that tea plants wildly grown throughout Korea is much more scientifically persuasive.
