Korea’s Greatest Hero

Korea was militarily unprepared when Japanese forces of the warlord Hideyoshi struck across the narrow strait separating the two countries in 1592.

Hastily marshaled Korean armies could not hold against the invaders, who were equipped with rifles.

On the seas, however, Korea produced her own defender in the person of Admiral Yi Sunshin, who employed newly-improved ‘turtle boats,’ the world’s

first ironclad warships, to scour the seas of Japanese vessels and destroy the invader’s lifeline for sopplies and reinforcements.

The Japanese withdrew, defeated. when Hideyoshi struck at Korea again in 1597, Admiral Yi again defeated the Japanese navy and thwarted Hideyoshi’s invasion scheme.

But after directing several tactically brilliant baffles, Admiral Yi was struck down by a sniper’s bullet at the moment of vctory on the deck of his flagship.

Koreans still revere his name as the greatest military hero and patriot of the nation.

Modern paintings bring to vivid life the career of Admiral Yi, 16th century heroic military leader and inventor of the world’s first ironclad warship, the turtle boats.
