Mount Sorak

Korea’s mountains often make up in steepness and

ruggedness for their relative lack of height. This is the

case especially at Mt. Sorak National Park on the

northeast coast, where towering escarpments resemble

the battlements of fantastic castles.

Often thick mists drift around and between the peaks,

blurring outlines and smudging steep distant pine trees

into figures from an ancient ink scroll.

Here, in fact, is where ancient artists received their

inspiration for those treasured paintings, the subjects of

which seem imaginatively extravagant to those who have

not visited Mt. Sorak.

Only five hours from Seoul by bus or car, a resort is under development

here which offers not only traditionjal pursuits

like hiking and mountain-climbing, but also the

convenience of luxury hotels, international cuisine,

swimming or skiing in season.

Mt. Sorak National Park is large enough that even after

completion of the resort there will be many acres of

unspoiled wilderness remainin to intrigue nature lovers,

excite sportsmen and inspire photographers and artists to

emulate the masterpieces of the past.

Autumn colors are sometimes muted by the mists that

form around the craggy peaks of Mt. Sorak.

Sunrise on this mountain’s top is one of the most beautiful

in the world.
